A Searing Romance with a Dark Edge
Ana Huang’s Twisted Love is the first book in the Twisted series and introduces readers to the intense relationship between Ava Chen and Alex Volkov. Ava is a kind-hearted, artistic woman haunted by a childhood trauma she can’t recall vividly. In contrast, Alex is a cold, calculating billionaire driven by revenge and burdened by his emotional trauma. When Alex agrees to watch over Ava as a favor to his best friend (Ava’s brother), their relationship shifts remarkably from acquaintances to lovers.
The novel inclines majorly into the beloved grumpy heart, sunny soul trope, with Ava’s warmth gradually warming Alex’s hardened exterior. However, the romance is a whole different ball game. Secrets from both of their pasts bubble under the radar, creating a tangled web of emotions and danger. This book delivers a roller coaster of highs and lows, complete with jealousy, possessiveness, and heartfelt moments that show the depths of Alex’s feelings for Ava.
Character Dynamics
Ava, an independent-minded individual and determined to see the good in people, is the ideal complement to Alex’s darkness. She feels authentic, even if her constant optimism feels a bit too ideal at times. Despite her traumatic past, she retains an inner strength that makes her a compelling heroine.
Alex, on the other hand, is a byronic hero, rich, emotionless, and willing to unleash hell for the woman he loves. His possessiveness and intensity drive much of the drama in the story. Some readers might find his over protectiveness romantic, while others may view it as over the top. He walks a fine line between being a dark, troubled hero and one who pushes too far into controlling territory. However, the novel does a decent job of making his motivations clear, rooted in past trauma and his desire to protect Ava from harm.
Writing Style and Pacing
Huang’s writing is smooth and accessible, making Twisted Love an easy read despite the often heavy subject matter. The pacing moves quickly, especially in the first half, where the banter between Ava and Alex is sharp, witty, and usually quite fun. But as their bond strengthens, the tone shifts to something darker, especially as revelations about Alex’s past and his thirst for vengeance come to light.
Nonetheless, the shift from breezy romance to intense drama may feel off-putting to some readers. The second half of the book introduces a series of twists and turns that, while surprising, can feel a little over the top. The tension between romance and thriller elements doesn’t always mesh perfectly, making the story feel somewhat disjointed.
Emotional Impact
There’s no denying that Twisted Love evokes a lot of emotion, from heart-in-throat romantic tension to moments of raw emotion between Ava and Alex. Alex’s steadfast devotion to Ava, though sometimes possessive, also provides a lot of swoon-worthy moments. His fawning after a key betrayal towards the final curtain is particularly impactful, as it shows how much he’s willing to sacrifice for Ava. On the other hand, some readers may find his jealousy and controlling tendencies uncomfortable at times, which can take away from the romantic appeal.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Twisted Love is an enthralling, if flawed, romance. The emotional current between Ava and Alex is exceptionally persuasive, but the story’s mood shifts and seldom dramatic plot twists might not intrigue everyone. Still, for fans of the yin and yang trope and readers looking for a fiery desire with plenty of steam, this book hits the mark. Despite its shortcomings, it leaves you curious to continue with the rest of the series.
If you love intense, brooding protagonists and light-hearted heroines with a touch of angst and drama, Twisted Love is worth a read. Perfect for fans of steamy contemporary romance with a darker edge.
